Lions and Lots of Questions

Today we finally learned about the lion! (Mrs. Kahler's class got to learn about the lion last week, so we have been getting very antsy...)

After we learned about the lion, we had a lot to say... specifically a lot of questions to ask!

Some first graders had more lion facts to share...

  • Females hunt instead of males. -Amaru
  • A lion can run almost as fast as a cheetah. Cheetahs run 75 miles per hour. -Parker

We were able to answer some questions on our own...

  • Do lions lay eggs or do they have babies born alive? -Michael
    • They are mammals, so they have babies born alive. (Michael answered his own question!)
  • Why is the lion such a fierce predator? -Miss Kloczko
    • The soft pads on the bottom of their feet help them to be sneaky. -Thomas

We thought we'd ask the world for the answers to the rest!

  • If the lion is the second largest feline species in the world, what is the largest? -Noah T.
  • Why do males need manes? -Hailey
  • Can they live longer than 10-14 years if they live at the zoo? -Jalen
  • How can they eat a giraffe if it's so tall? -Analisa
  • Do they eat cape flat lizards? -Parker
  • How can they eat elephants? -Hailey
  • Do lions eat chameleons? -Rohin
Can you answer any of our questions? Leave a comment below!

  1. Hi Miss Kloczko's Class!

I did some research and found out that male lions have manes because they are used to show the female lions how strong they are. It is kind of like peacocks having really showy feathers.

  2. Lions manes are like fancy hair-do's. The prettier the mane the more the female lions want to be around him. 😃

  4. Dear First graders,
Here's what I found out by Googling one of your questions!

"Yes they will eat elephants if the opportunity comes around. Usually it is calves that wandered from the herd, or sick or injured members of a herd that are falling behind. They will often take most advantage of it at night as a lions eyesight at night is far better then an elephants, so it is a lot easier to separate a young calf from the herd and take it down." From Yahoo answers.

    Mrs. Kloczko

  5. Or this reply. So interesting!

They typically won't prey on an elephant unless it is young, elderly, sick, or unless the lions are in a very large pride. They try to stick with less dangerous prey, such as wildebeest, but it would be understandable if the pride was in dire need of food that they might risk attacking an elephant.

  6. I would like to answer Analisa's question about how lions eat Giraffe, lions usually attack them from behind when giraffe is near river to drink water. Because they are so tall they have to bend themselves to reach the water. In that position they are totally unaware of who is attacking from behind. Hope this helps.
