Student Blogger: Peyton- Whales

Hello, my name is Peyton.  I am in Miss Kloczko's first grade class.  We are learning about Blue and Orca whales.  Whales have blubber to keep warm from the cold water in the oceans.

Blue whales can weigh up to 150 tons and are 80 feet long.  This means they are bigger than a bus!  They have two blowholes on their back and when they blow water it stinks so bad!  They also have a dorsal fin.  Blue whales have baleen that is black in color.  They eat krill and plankton.

Orca whales are 23 feet long and weigh up to 12,000 pounds.  Orca whales have their eyes under the white spots on their head.  Orca whales have teeth, not baleen.  Whales are known to spyhop.  Spyhopping is when a whale pokes its head out of the water to see what is going on.  I would like to know if Orca whales eat Blue whales.  I wonder this because Orca whales have teeth.  Some day I hope to see a whale at Sea World.

Learning about whales is so much fun!

    1. Hi Uncle Mackie,

We used Crisco for our blubber experiement. Maybe if you put it on your whole body you will stay warm.?

  4. Dear Peyton,
I did not know that the water that a blue whale spurts from its blowholes smells bad! Where did you learn that? That is so interesting! I am going to do some research and find out if orca whales ever eat blue whales. Maybe you can help me tomorrow at school!
    Love,
    Miss Kloczko

  5. Don't think it worked with our smart phones. Aunt Martha and Papa tried about 6 times with our phones and it didn't seem to work...sorry!

So here we go Peyton! Now we hope we are blog wizards!

Let's see if it works from Papa's laptop.

Papa remembers when the computer at college was a huge building 7 stories tall in Madison, Wisconsin and we had to enter data with punch cards! Now there's more processing power in a phone.

I am so pleased with your computer skills Peyton! I like your blog on music and the whales. The blogs are so well done!

Did you know Papa has seen live Ora Whales in Alaska? We fly over Orca Bay at Cordova, Alaska to go heliskiing. I first saw them in Cook's Bay near Anchorage, Alaska on a hunting trip years ago. We saw Beluga Whales also. They are all so beautiful! There are lots of Sea Otters and Eagles as well! Do you want a picture over looking Orca Bay?

Listen to Larry & Joni and be like a sponge absorbing all you can every day!

Let me know if my comments get to you from here in Dallas, Texas.

Sounds like Uncle Mackie lives in the Arctic Circle!

    Love,
    Papa

    2. Hi Peyt,

I'm so glad you are learning so much about whales! However, I hope I never have to be over the blowhole of a blue whale if it STINKS, YUCKY!! Keep learning, I'm amazed each evening when I get to hear what you have learned each day.

      Keep Dreaming.

      Love,

      Daddy

  6. Hi Peyt! I love reading your blogs...it's so fun to hear what you are doing in school...helps those of us that are so far away keep in touch with what you are doing!

The only whales I've ever seen are at Sea World. They are fascinating creatures! Your mom, auntie M, uncle Mackie and uncle monkey all went to see them at Sea World when they were about your age. We had so much fun!

Keep learning and blogging! Love, Mamaw
